If you've listened to the podcast it's not secret that we have never been a "DC" friendly show. This is due to the "Snyderverse" that has mishandled some of the most beloved characters in comic book lore. Batman V Superman was a critical flop as well as a commercial flop. Suicide Squad although not Snyder has been met with similar distaste, and with good reason. David Ayers and the studio didn't know what they wanted from each other and it shows. Suicide Squad may have been a decent film, but like many of the DC efforts we'll never know. It is even now rumored Jared Leto will get his own "Joker" film as well as Joaquin Phoenix getting his own as well! Such a mess!
It would seem Warner Brothers panicked while making Justice League and ended firing Zack Snyder mid production. This threw fandom in a tizzy because even though it may seem unbelievable there are die hard Snyder fans! They enjoyed what dark mess Snyder made and to this day still reject any hand Joss Whedon had in completing the film, even petitioning for the "Snyder-Cut". This is very unlikely as once again Justice League was a flop.
Wonder Woman is the saving grace of the DC Universe as it was both loved by critics and fans, but nobody can understand why. Patty Jenkins is probably the best director these films have seen (granted that's 1 one out of 3) Gal Gadot was competent as Wonder Woman (and quite stunning), but there were more vacant stares that dialog. The gem of the film was Chris Pine carrying the acting duties as well as the comedy beats. It was a good looking film full of action, but failed miserably in the 3rd act with the reveal of (SPOILERS) Professor Lupin!!! There is a sequel in the works and as the most successful film in the DC universe, it will surely perform well. Character development would do this franchise good!
So with so many unsuccessful films and one hit where should they go? Many say reboot the whole thing, myself included. It has been reported Ben Affleck doesn't want to be the Bat any longer and Cavil seems joyless at the prospect of being Superman one more time. It's a mess honestly. With one hit film in a "franchise" reboot is the way to go. Unfortunately a project was too far into the works to quit on. That project was AQUAMAN!
Once directed by James Cameron and played by Vincent Chase, Aquaman is now played by Game of Thrones and Stargate Atlantis (ironic) alumnus Jason Mamoa. In the coming days it is rumored that the teaser trailer will be released and we at The Geiger Counter will be sure to bring it to you as fast as we can! Directed by James Wan most famous for Saw, Insidious, and the blockbuster that was Fast 7. This man knows action and suspense and this could be a Thor: Ragnorok change in the DC Universe. We hope so! Can the man that commands the seven seas and talk to dolphins correct the disconnected road that has clearly just been making it up as they go along? We hope so.
I've been accused of not liking DC before, but that simply is not true. Batman has always been my favorite comic book hero and I own and have read many of his stories with great enjoyment. Christopher Nolan made 2 great Batman films. I thought Man of Steel was going to be great, and then it happened and has been non stop. Fool me once! But yet I still keep coming back for more!
So please comic movie gods! Grant me a good DC film that has a strong script/acting and visual effects! Never thought I'd say this but, SAVE US AQUAMAN! --Glenn
